Dehradun 2015 Episode 2 :The quest to meet Mr.Ruskin Bond at Mussoorie

Recently I watched the movie “The Sound of Music” and the famous song from the movie reminds me of Mussoorie, the valley of dreams, hope and beauty. The verse of the song goes like:(For the song click here :The sounds of music)

The hills are alive with the sound of music
With songs they have sung for a thousand years
The hills fill my heart with the sound of music
My heart wants to sing every song it hears

My heart wants to beat like the wings of the birds
That rise from the lake to the trees
My heart wants to sigh like a chime
That flies from a church on a breeze

I go to the hills when my heart is lonely
I know I will hear what I’ve heard before
My heart will be blessed with the sound of music
And I’ll sing once more

Mussoorie, the queen of hills is a beauty well protected by armed mountains, long lived trees, cold breezes, flora and fauna and emancipated animals. My Dehradun trip would have been incomplete if we missed Mussoorie. It is 35 km from Dehradun and at a height of 1,880 metres (6,170 ft).

We reached Mussoorie at around 12 pm and headed towards the main promenade,The Mall Road.

A little bit of History goes like during the British rule there were signs like “Indians and Dogs Not Allowed” and racism all over the place. Motilal Nehru, the father of Jawaharlal Nehru, deliberately broke this rule every day and pay the fine whenever he was in Mussoorie.

Mussoorie is like poetry to a man who loves it so much to be living there for ages now.The first thing that came to my mind when I talk about hill stations is his work. His works are solely based on life in the foothills of Himalayas. Yes, he is The Ruskin Bond. ruskin_bond_20150309

Well aware of Ruskin Bond’s address and all the people who came long way to see him added all the anticipation to meet him. Being a fan of his ever green book “The Room on the roof” and all the hearty thoughts that connects to you ,reminds you of your childhood ,and your home town;(Yes,my home town is Dehradun) I had decided to meet him.

After all the shopping stuff we asked for the route guidance and to my surprise people were not aware of Ivy Cottage(the place where he lives) but when I replaced my question to “Bhaiya,Ruskin Bond ka ghar kaha hai?” ,I was guided so well. We walked uphill endlessly with an excitement to finally look at the place from where such beautiful words and thoughts pour out.

Walking 20-25 minutes from Mall road we reached Ivy Cottage, Landour.I was sure about the area as I have already read the description of the place. The red stairs near the coloured building, living in first floor ,an open window ,and the beautific scenery;the picture was too clear.

The leaves are a fresh pale green in the spring rain.I can look at the trees from my window-look down on them almost, because the window is on the first floor of the cottage.I do nearly all my writing at the window-seat.The trees watch over me as I write.

-Excerpts from Rain in the Mountains by Ruskin Bond

Without any doubt we went upstairs and ringed the bell. Not sure what the picture will be,we were addressed by a young lady.On asking for permission to meet the man we were informed that he went to Dehra for some work. Not sure he was there or not because visitors are mostly not allowed at his place. But for fans like us he already has his way.He meets his fans, autographs their books and talk with them at a famous book store in mall road (Cambridge Book Store) every Saturday.IMG_3230 IMG_3231dsc_1793 (1)The bookseller told me to come tomorrow and meet him personally. But I knew this won’t be possible as I have my whole family waiting and their plans as well.I took an already autographed book and was happy to finally discover the magical place from where a writer arose.11647286_10153394598988180_901541346_n

P.S. The Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee,Mr Ruskin Bond is a pioneer to Children Literature and much more. Read the excerpts below to fall in love with the Sahitya Academy Awardee’s work.

All night the rain has been drumming on the corrugated tin roof. There has been no storm,no thunder, just the steady swish of a tropical downpour. It helps me to lie awake;at the same time,it doesn’t keep me from sleeping.

It is a good sound to read by-the rain outside, the quiet within-and,although tin roofs are given to springing unaccountable leaks, there is a feeling of being untouched by,and yet in touch with, the rain.

Dehradun 2015-Episode 1 : LIVE Event :Passing Out Parade at Indian Military Academy

“I won’t die in an accident or die in the disease; I will go down in glory.”

-Major Sudhir Kumar Walia

These were our Indian soldiers who fought day and night fearlessly guarding our borders while we sleep peacefully. What makes them an Indian Army Soldiers? Their sheer desire, dedication, discipline, and love for the nation. Their life was never a bed of roses from training to being martyrdom.

Today my blog will talk about the main event, Passing Out Parade, being held at Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. It is similar to a graduation at College.

As my maternal uncle, Major General Yadvinder Singh Mahiwal is the deputy commandant of IMA Dehradun; we got the privilege to attend the 136th regular course passing out parade.

Not so familiar with strict and a disciplinary background as that of an army man, I will try my best to describe the exalted day. The night before the Passing out parade we were invited for light and sound show at IMA Dehradun. The show depicts how a cadet transforms into an Officer and how our very own Indian Military Academy gave us soldiers the whole country is so proud of.

Passing Out Parade was a never to be missed event. On 13th June 2015 around 6:30 am all the seats were occupied to witness the great parade. The audience included Officers, guardians, immediate family of the officers, and parents of the cadets who will soon be Officers of Indian Army. The Chief of Naval Staff Admiral RK Dhowan was the Reviewing Officer at the Parade.

The two hour program at Chetwode Building started with parade by gentlemen cadets syncing each step with the other as if being programmed to do so. The program included the Parade inspection which later ended with 3 helicopters (One hosted Indian Nation Flag, second hosted the Indian Army flag and third hosted the Indian Military Academy Flag) pouring rose petals on the cadets depicting that the inspection went well :

This was soon accompanied by sword of honor and Oath Ceremony where every cadet took the oath to keep the nation their first priority and their own self the last.IMA-Passing-Out-Parade-POP-Picture-8

The young Officers resonated the army song “Kadam Kadam badhaye ja” and the Indian National Anthem. 616 Gentlemen Cadets remembered all their glorious moments at the institute, the rigorous trainings, their hard work, determination and their sheer joy of being a part of Indian Army.IMA-Passing-Out-Parade-POP-Picture-9IMA-Passing-Out-Parade-POP-Picture-11

Keeping alive the glorious tradition of providing excellent officers, Indian Military Academy stands upright like a father to a proud nation.

Maggi: A banned Love !

Me: Hey,What a dull day! I don’t feel like cooking.

Friend: Don’t worry, we will eat something outside.

Me:Not enough money left yaar.It will cost much 😦

Friend:We can opt for 2 minutes Maggi Noodles.Good to taste and cheap too. What say?

Me:Yeah.Yeah.Lets take it and have a delicious yummy dinner.

These were the random talks which were common those days, specially for people living away from home. But as its said “Everything comes with an expiry date”,our chats on maggi had an end too. After being banned for containing too much of MSG,(Monosodium Glutamate),the taste enhancer and lead amount seven times the allowed content turns out to be harmful for us.”The two-minute death of India’s favourite noodle brand,” reads the headline on one the Firstpost news website.

Though being banned across the country,Nestle Global CEO Paul Bulcke reiterate its statement that Maggi is safe for consumption and has followed all the food safety regulations. Many celebrities have been targeted for endorsing the harmful product.Twitter outraged celebrities probes:

2 3 4

and the Internet has amplified people’s reaction to the product.

1 CGwRr76UQAAK-r7 maggi-55701e0930909_exlst

How is celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan,Preity Zinta,Maduri Dixit liable for the product which is legally allowed to manufacture and sell.If they are endorsing the product, its their duty to set the primary research on the product as well as on the company. But a person cannot go beyond a certain level. If the product is legally allowed to do its sale, how can a person endorsing it be penalized?

Already knowing the fact, for how many days can you assume the ban on Maggi will continue? Here in India where there are midday lunch mishaps, people licking for street foods near garbage dumps or served without gloves on,where coca cola was found as a pesticide contaminator, how much can you assume people will take care of food policies?

Not only in India ,different countries have also been associated with food poisoning scandals.North Korea and Bolivia had banned Mc Donalds. In Taiwan, a massive scandal was unearthed in 2014, in which cooking oil and dried Tofu were found to be deliberately adulterated to boost profits.Beef-burgers were reportedly contaminated by pork and horse meat in the UK.

Secondly, one of the main important question associated with it is how lead made its way in Maggi when the metal has no role in Maggi’s manufacturing.People assume its the water that contains lead because as per 2013 report in Deccan Chronicle stating that the drinking water in Bangalore has been contaminated by this metal, along with others.Lead reaches towards the water through unscientific dumping . CGvY2xqU8AA3o2_

Its lead today, some other metal tomorrow. Its Maggi today, something else tomorrow?

When our air, soil and water sources are dirty, harmful substances will certainly make their way to our food and we will be helpless.

On this Environment Day,I request everyone reading this blog to take your safety in your hands.

Be Healthy,Stay Healthy.

The first time the man sees the woman he will marry

It’s all about the time when a man knows he has found his soul mate. Point is how does a man get to know she is the one? Some men still believes in Bollywood style and assume there will be violins all around(Trust me I have heard this from a guy) ,some believe in the first arranged meet  and some of them are the secret admirers believing the moment will be when they can finally express their love to each other.

Men or women both have different relationship goals in their twenties and thereafter.  Most men in their twenties are the one “who doesn’t know what he wants yet” .They look for an exciting relationship, sexual attraction and the woman they can flaunt about. But later most of them realizes and settle for the understanding, sensitiveness, stability and independent mate for life.

Same goes for some women too. Here are some excerpts from the movie “He is not that into you” which explains a guy prospective too well. Check out the pictures:

Talking about title, let’s assume you (the reader) are all set for your first marriage date. The anxiety to finally meet the one after drooling at all the girls around you is overwhelming. Amid the clothes you wore and the place you both meet at, you managed to make the first move.

[Note for women: No first move. He wants to decide how to woo you. Be a lady and let him 😀 ]

[Note to men: Hope you never have to say this to yourself. “Damn, I wish I had the cojones to ask her out”]

If after all the talks you leave with a little magic in you, congratulations. You are hooked for life 😀

There is a lot of difference when it comes to the first time man sees the woman and when he sees her as the one he wants to marry/will marries. Marriage gives an assurance of safety and security.

Today, as per my awareness when a man sees his woman he expects her to be :

  • Self-developed, Intelligent, articulate and open minded.
  • Man would rather feel unloved than disrespected. Respect him and he is there holding your baby with you 😀
  • Men care about their wife’s appearance.
  • They want their woman to know how much they love them.

No matter whenever you might meet your “The one”,be true to yourself and to the other side too. There is always a right place and the right time where the right man will find you or you will find him.
